Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that can help preserve a damaged or decayed tooth’s structure, function, and appearance. They are an excellent option for individuals who need a more extensive restoration than a dental filling but do not require a full dental crown.

At Canyons Family Dental, we offer inlays and onlays as part of our restorative dentistry services to help our patients maintain their dental health and achieve a beautiful smile. Our experienced dental team works with state-of-the-art technology to provide top-quality dental care to our patients in Sandy, UT.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorations placed on the teeth’ chewing surface. Inlays are placed inside a tooth’s cusps (bumps), while onlays cover one or more points or the entire surface of the tooth. Both restorations are made from durable materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made in a dental laboratory based on an impression of your teeth. They are then bonded to the tooth using a unique adhesive, which helps strengthen and protect its remaining structure.

When Are Inlays and Onlays Needed?

Inlays and onlays are recommended for individuals with moderate to severe tooth decay or damage that cannot be repaired with a dental filling. They are an excellent alternative to dental crowns requiring more extensive tooth preparation.

Inlays and onlays can also be used to replace old, worn-out metal fillings or to address cosmetic concerns such as discoloration or minor chips in the teeth.

What Is the Procedure for Getting Inlays and Onlays?

Getting inlays and onlays typically involves two visits to our office. During your first visit, our dentist will prepare your tooth by removing the decayed or damaged portion and taking an impression of the tooth. Then, the image will be used to create your custom-made inlay or onlay.

While you wait for your restoration to be fabricated in the dental laboratory, we will temporarily fill your tooth to protect it from further damage or sensitivity.

During your second visit, we will remove the temporary filling and bond the inlay or onlay to your tooth using a unique adhesive. Again, our dentist will ensure that your restoration fits perfectly and feels comfortable in your mouth.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays offer several benefits over other types of dental restorations:

  1. Preserves natural tooth structure – Inlays and onlays are custom-made to fit precisely into your tooth’s natural shape, which allows for the maximum preservation of your natural tooth structure.
  2. Durable and long-lasting – Inlays and onlays are made from solid and durable materials that can last for many years with proper care.
  3. Easy to care for – Inlays and onlays can be cared for just like your natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are needed to maintain good oral health.
  4. Cosmetic benefits – Inlays and onlays can improve the appearance of your teeth by covering discoloration or minor chips.
